Opera Barga Festival first came to be in 1967 thanks to the efforts of Peter and Gillian Hunt, respectively actor and set designer who had emigrated to the small town of Barga (LU) Italy only a few years earlier. The discovery of the baroque Teatro dei Differenti inspired them to set up courses for young singers and musicians with the intent of putting on smaller, lesser known operas of the baroque period together with more modern and even contemporary compositions. |

The Regatta of the Maritime Republics |

| Description : |
Since 1956 the cities of Amalfi, Genoa, Venice and Pisa have participated in the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics.
The event, introduced for tourist reasons, evokes the past glory of the most important episodes of the story of the four Maritime Republics.
The Regatta is preceded by a great parade of 320 people (80 for each one of the Republics), which evokes the characteristics, the events and the characters of the history of these four ancient maritime cities, which during the Middle Ages ploughing the seas with their fleets prospered and spread their culture throughout the Mediterranean by means of their military and commercial dominion.

The Luminara of Saint Ranieri

Every year on the night of the 16th of June the enchantment of the Illuminations of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno (the so-called Lungarni). In fact, following an ancient tradition the Pisans celebrate their patron saint, St. Ranieri, of the following day. There are about seventy-thousand wax candles which at every edition are meticulously set in smooth and white glasses and fixed then onto wooden white-painted frames, modelled in such a way as to exalt the outline of the palaces, of the bridges, of the churches and of the towers reflecting on the river.
The exceptional appendix to this scenery is the leaning tower, enlightened in the same old fashion with oil lamps, set also on the crenulations of the city walls in the area encircling the Piazza dei Miracoli.
